The Western Experience The Alamo located in Texas was originally named Misión San Antonio de Valero which was named after St. Anthony of Padua. It was built on the banks of the San Antonio River around 1718 which housed missionaries and their Indian converts for about seventy years. In 1793, Spanish officials took possession of San Antonios five missions and distributed their lands to the locals. In the early 1800s, the Spanish military was stationed at the former mission. Because it stood in a grove of cottonwood trees, they referred to the old mission which became their fresh fort as El Alamo. This was in honor of Alamo de Parras, their hometown in Mexico.
